Chicago Tribune Derails Blago Investigation

Many are at a loss as to why Patrick Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney, hurried the arrest of beleaguered Illinois Governor, Rod Blagojevich. General opinion is that it was in order to prevent him from making an illegal appointment to the US Senate. Thereby avoiding any legal battles concerning the removal of his selection. However, on the WSJ blog, The Wire, it was reported that the arrests were moved ahead of schedule due to the Chicago Tribune’s leaking of a story related to the investigation. Consequently moving up the FBI timetable on capturing Blagojevich and his Chief of Staff.

From The Wire,
The Wire-The precise timing of Tuesday’s dramatic, pre-dawn arrest was not dictated by Fitzgerald, nor was it dictated by the pace of Blagojevich’s alleged “crime spree.” It was dictated by the Chicago Tribune, according to people close to the investigation and a careful reading of the FBI’s affidavit in the case.

At Fitzgerald’s request, the paper had been holding back a story since October detailing how a confidante of Blagojevich was cooperating with his office.

Chicago Tribune editor, Gerould Kern, issued this statement, concerning the early release of the story,

“In each case, we strive to make the right decision as reporters and as citizens,” he said.
If the Tribune had not released the story early, as per their agreement with Fitzgerald, the Feds could have gathered more evidence against the Governor, making a conviction more probable. As well as potentially bringing down some fairly high profile Washington insiders.
The Wire-Perhaps even more encouraging to the feds listening in on Dec. 4 was what they knew about the first time such a deal was discussed. About a month earlier, Blagojevich was caught on tape describing an approach by an alleged associate of Jackson. Blagojevich’s now-infamous quote about that meeting had been tantalizing. “We were approached ‘pay to play.’ That, you know, he’d raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator.”

On Dec. 4, with the feds listening in, Blagojevich was allegedly putting this deal back into play.

The conversation resumed later that same day, as Blagojevich allegedly told his brother, a man identified in the affidavit as “Fundraiser A,” that he was “elevating” Mr. Jackson on the list of candidates, because the governor might be able to get something “tangible up front” for the pick.

He told his brother to meet with someone (unidentified by the feds) whom the pair believed to be close to Jackson. He urged his brother to tell this alleged supporter of Jackson that “some of this stuffs gotta start happening now… right now…and we gotta see it. You understand?” He was talking about campaign cash, the feds allege.
On December 5th the Tribune released its story changing Blagojevich’s plans and derailed the meeting between his brother and Jackson’s envoy.
The Wire-The next morning, on Friday, Dec. 5, it all came crashing down for the FBI agents underneath the headphones.

The Tribune’s front page screamed: “Feds taped Blagojevich; TRIBUNE EXCLUSIVE: Adviser cooperated with corruption probe, sources say.”

Blagojevich read the same headline. “Undo” that “thing,” the governor allegedly told his brother, according to the FBI. And just like that, the meeting was off, only one day after it had been put back into play.
What is puzzling about the Tribune’s actions is that Blagojevich was planning on exerting political pressure on Tribune co-owner, Sam Zell to fire some of his editorial staff. On September 29th, the Trib had released a scathing editorial concerning the Governor’s pay-to-play politics and recommended impeachment.

From the Washington Post,
Washington Post-Blagojevich seized on the fact that Tribune, in attempting to unload the Cubs, was seeking aid from the Illinois Finance Authority to ease the sale of the team's ballpark, Wrigley Field.

On Nov. 4, the complaint says, Blagojevich told his chief of staff, John Harris, that because of the impeachment editorials and the pending Wrigley deal, an unnamed Tribune financial adviser should be told that "our recommendation is to fire all these [expletive] people, get 'em the [expletive] out of there and get us some editorial support."
With Fitzgerald’s reputation for going after the press when they hamper Federal investigations. I think it is safe to say there might be some scrutiny into the Tribune’s actions. Whether or not anything comes of it is another story. One which will probably be released earlier than it is supposed to.

Sen. Coburn Blasts UAW

On Friday, Ron Gettelfinger tried shifting total blame for the failure of the bailout on to Senate Republicans. Claiming they were looking for a two-fer; protecting the foreign brands in their states and trying to kill organized labor. Senator Coburn (R-OK), fired back at the UAW in an interview with CNSNews.com.

From CNSNews.com,

(CNSNews.com) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is “solely” to blame for the collapse of negotiations on a $14-billion auto bailout deal that stalled in the Senate Thursday, Sen. Tom Colburn (R-Okla.) told CNSNews.com on Friday.

But UAW President Ron Gettelfinger in a press conference Friday morning blamed Republican senators, who he said resented his organization.

The auto bailout bill, which passed the House in a 237-170 vote on Wednesday, was defeated in a 52-35 procedural vote in the Senate late Thursday night after negotiations between automakers, the UAW, and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) fell apart.

“As far as the failure of last night, it solely lies on UAW,” Coburn told CNSNews.com. “All we asked was, ‘Just give us a date at which you will have competitive wage rates. We will put it in and that’s what you will have to meet.’ They would not move. They would not renegotiate their contract with GM as far as wage rates.” read more...
The UAW and MSM also failed to mention that in some of the Southern states that opposed the bailout and are home to the foreign car plants, GM has manufacturing facilities of their own. For other sources on information refuting the UAW propaganda, go to PCT daily rant; UAW & GM, Screwing the Middle Class.

At least Coburn, and the some of the Senate, had the fortitude to stand up and say "no" to the bailout. Which would have accomplished nothing except, delay GM's inevitable failure or make them bailout junkies.

Obama: Fox is Watching the Hen House

Team Bama has probed itself and the findings are, "No contact in Ill. gov scandal." Our citizenry can put their heads on their pillows tonight, resting assured, the fox is watching the hen house.

From AP, via Yahoo News.
CHICAGO – President-elect Barack Obama said Monday a review by his own lawyer shows he had no direct contact with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich about the appointment of a Senate replacement, and transition aides did nothing inappropriate.

Obama pledged to make the review public, but said he decided to hold off because prosecutors asked for a delay and "I don't want to interfere with an ongoing investigation." U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald released a statement confirming the request.

Controversy has swirled around the president-elect and his incoming White House chief of staff, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, following Blagojevich's arrest last week on charges he schemed to trade Obama's Senate seat for personal gain.

Obama, fielding questions at a news conference, sidestepped when asked whether Emanuel had spoken with aides to the governor about potential Senate appointees.

Emanuel was one of several aides who watched the news conference from the wings.

The president-elect pledged the results of the investigation by his incoming White House counsel, Gregory Craig, would be released "in due course."

He said the probe was complete and thorough, but did not say which of his aides Craig interviewed, whether any of them was under oath at the time, or any other details. read more...
Let's not forget who Mr. Craig is either. His repertoire of high profile cases demonstrates his love of transparency and justice for the down-trodden .
The Politico-Among Craig’s other high-profile cases: successfully representing Elián González's father, a Cuban, in his efforts to regain custody of his son; and representing U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in connection during the Volcker Commission's investigation of the oil-for-food Program at the United Nations. read more...
Thank you Mr. President-elect, with a man like this on the case, we can all put this ugliness behind us. Now, we can get on to something more important, like stimulus packages and taxpayer funded bailouts.

Accelerant used on Gov. Palin's Church

Investigators from the ATF are saying an accelerant was used at various spots around the church that Governor Palin attends. What was not originally reported was that there was a small group, including two children, inside the church when the blaze was set.

From the AP, via Breibart.com
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - An accelerant was poured around the exterior of Gov. Sarah Palin's church before fire heavily damaged the building, federal investigators said Monday.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said the accelerant was poured at several locations around the church, including entrances.

Lab tests will determine the type of substance involved. Possibilities include gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel or even lamp oil, Agent Nick Starcevic said.

The blaze was set Friday night at the main entrance of the Wasilla Bible Church while a small group, including two children, were inside. No one was injured. Fire authorities were called to the scene at 9:40 p.m., unusually early for many arson fires, Starcevic said.

"It's kind of odd to do in the evening hours," he said. "I can tell you that most of the arson fires I've worked on are late nighttime, usually when no one is there." read more...

If this wasn't an attempt on somebody's life, then Ron Gettelfinger, President of the UAW, will be voting Republican in 2010.

Nevertheless, where is the indignation over this "hate-crime?" Is it okay because these are supposed Right-Wing Zealots? My what a wonderful double-standard the world has adopted these days.

Beyond the political ramifications, these maniacs tried killing children. The fact is kids don't care about politics, religion, or race. So, why were they being targeted and why isn't anyone talking about that?

Dems Set the Experience Bar Even Lower With Caroline Kennnedy

Seems like all you need these days to become a Senator is a high powered name, or a funny one, no practical political experience except some fund raising, and be owed a couple of favors by the winning candidate.

From Bloomberg,
Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, will seek the U.S. Senate seat Hillary Clinton is vacating to become secretary of state.

She plans to ask New York Governor David Paterson to consider her for the Senate appointment, said her spokesman Stefan Friedman.

New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein also confirmed that Kennedy is seeking the job. “She told me this is something she wants to do,” said Klein. He was Kennedy’s boss as she helped raise $65 million from foundations as head of the school system’s Office of Strategic Initiatives.

How convenient that Hillary Clinton is moving on to greener pastures at State. Coincidentally, leaving an opening for Caroline, who has done massive fund raising for Team Bama and helped ole Joey Biden become Veep. This doesn't smell of Chi-Town pay offs, not in the least.

UAW & GM, Screwing the Middle Class

Questions have been raised about the intentions of the Senate Republicans and their opposition to the Auto Bailout for Detroit. My first question is, “What opposition?” They were more than willing to extend the “lifeline” of credit to the embattled auto-makers, but, it required certain concessions by the UAW, which they were not willing to give. Of course the Moonbats and Unions are now using the populist rally cry, “Republicans hate the middle class.”

Ron Gettel-Giving America the Finger, is a self-serving criminal who is putting the needs of about 140,000 auto-workers (Despite the propaganda of GM employing 250,000 people, this is how many they actually employ here in the States.) ahead of the rest us. But the dullards on the Left are to thick to see that and jump right off the cliff, as usual. Furthermore, this collectivist-scum has the nerve to talk about protectionism and preach solidarity?

Back in 2007, the UAW renegotiated its contract with GM and walked away smelling like a rose. Here are some of the details.
USA Today-The deal includes GM's top priority in the negotiations -- shifting most of its $51 billion unfunded retiree health care obligation to a UAW-run trust. GM would pay about 70 percent of that obligation, or $36 billion, into the trust, called a Voluntary Employees Beneficiary Association, or VEBA, the person briefed on the talks said.

Wages would stay the same for the length of the four-year deal, but workers would be given a bonus of $3,000 once the contract is ratified and then bonuses of 3 percent, 4 percent and 3 percent of their annual pay each year for the last three years of the contract, said one person briefed on the contract details.

The agreement did nothing to eliminate the JOBS bank. This controversial program paid UAW workers full salaries, who have been laid off, to sit on their asses after collecting unemployment insurance.

Now look at the cost of how much this “union welfare” is costing the average middle class consumer.
CNN Money-Health care is the biggest chunk. GM (Charts), for instance spends $1,635 per vehicle on health care for active and retired workers in the U.S. Toyota (Charts) pays nothing for retired workers - it has very few - and only $215 for active ones.

Other labor costs add to the bill. Contract issues like work rules, line relief and holiday pay amount to $630 per vehicle - costs that the Japanese don't have. And paying UAW members for not working when plants are shut costs another $350 per vehicle.

Grand total to the consumers, an extra $2,615/car for subsidizing the whining welfare rats. GM is only more than happy to keep them on tit so long as they are getting their profits. Figure this extra cost into financing and I guarantee it makes GMAC a little extra scratch.

So, where is the indignation for the average American? Where is the Left’s populist outcry about how Un-American this is? Why isn’t anyone talking about how we are being taken advantage of GM and the UAW? And now these crooks want us to bail them out because they are greedy, over-bloated, lethargic, and thoughtless? So, who really hates the middle-class?

Despite our Congress's better judgment they were willing to help them. However, it came down to $3.oo/hour less and they wouldn't budge for the sake of their country. This entitlement attitude is exactly what has brought most of this on. They are what is wrong, let them fail.

Also, this is what we get from our so-called unbiased media when we need the proper information, not propaganda for the UAW.

Blago and Bama: Brothers in Message

The Chicago political contraption really has produced some very interesting characters, I use that term loosely. Blagojevich, Ryan, Emanuel, Rostenkowski, Obama, Axelrod, Daley, and on and on. It is one place, like many other corrupt states, where party lines are blurred by bribery, cronyism, extortion, quid quo pro, etc., bi-partisan politix at its best. Many Pols in the political architecture of Chi-Town are of the cookie cutter variety and it seems, at least in message, that Blagojevich and Bama are quite representative of this fact.

From Baretta’s victory speech, after winning the Illinois Governor’s seat back in 02’
“Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, Illinois has voted for change.”
From Prez-elect Bama’s victory speech in Hyde Park in Nov 08’.

“It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.”
I don’t think the Obamabots imagined change meaning Windy City politics as usual. Looking at the handling of the Blagojevich scandal by the administration, the probability of reneging on campaign promises to the Obamanation, and the personal surrounding the Prez-elect, I think it is sufficed to say that not much has “changed.”

On the Hill (Featuring: Armstrong Williams, Bob Gates, & Barack Obama)

Let's look at where the Hill dwellers are migrating today. Armstrong Williams makes a plethora of excuses for the Libs "Culture of Corruption," Ole'Bob Gates is gettin' tough, Prez-Elect Obama appoints Donavan HUD Sec.

>Armstrong Williams on Political Corruption

HillTube-

Dear Armstrong,

Why is it now "everyone" is corrupt when the Libs are dropping like flies? I don't remember that being said when it was Repubs suffering from the corruption blues. Why are you defending the Great Leader when no one has really made anything other than soft allegations? Worried about something? Oh yeah, please give me an example of what leadership he has shown except silence. Finally, I am not sure sure which Republican you are mentioning in your "expert analysis." But I am sure he is fluffing up the pillows in the Big House for Blogajevich, Rangel, and Jefferson.

Gates warns U.S. enemies not to test Obama

The Hill.com-In a surprise visit to the Middle East Saturday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned U.S. enemies that they would test President-elect Obama at their own peril.

“Anyone who thought that the upcoming months might present opportunities to ‘test’ the new president would be sorely mistaken,” Gates said in Bahrain.

“President Obama and his national security team, myself included, will be ready to defend the interests of the United States and our friends and allies from the moment he takes office on Jan. 20.” read more...
Bob Gates is a pragmatic sort of a fellow most in the military are proud to work for. He has continuously listened to his troops on the ground and made his decisions based on their observations and opines. Other than a playoff system for the BCS, the Gates pick is about the only thing the Prez-elect and I agree on. I'm sure Bama is loosing sleep over that.

Obama picks Donovan to lead HUD

The Hill.com-President-elect Obama on Saturday announced Shaun Donovan as his choice to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Donovan currently serves under Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a commissioner of Housing Preservation and Development in New York City.

“With experience that stretches from the public sector to the private sector to academia, Shaun will bring to this important post fresh thinking, unencumbered by old ideology and outdated ideas,” Obama said in his weekly radio address.

“He understands that we need to move past the stale arguments that say low-income Americans shouldn’t even try to own a home or that our mortgage crisis is due solely to a few greedy lenders,” Obama added. “He knows that we can put the dream of owning a home within reach for more families, so long as we’re making loans in the right way, and so long as those who buy a home are prepared for the responsibilities of homeownership.” read more...

I don't know but for some reason I am smelling another stimulus package wrapped in the guise of home ownership assistance. How's about this stale old argument,"Quit trying to make everybody feel good and let them get a dose of reality, quit freaking trying to spend your way out of debt, and when a person can afford a house they will be able to buy one!" Is it that hard?

FireDogLake, Rove, and the Apocalypse

I am now waiting for the Moon to become as red as sack cloth, fire to shoot from the heavens, and the Four Horseman to ride the skies. This is truly the Apocalypse. FireDogLake, a group of Libtarded Collectivists, guilty of all sorts of moonbattery, has endorsed Karl Rove’s one man campaign to prevent Eric Holder from assuming Attorney General.

FireDogLake-Wow. It sure isn't every day that I wish Karl Rove the best of luck, but today is that rarest of days. Go get em Karl, because the nation needs a lot cleaner and more inspirational person than Eric Holder to lead the Department of Justice out of the morass the Bush Administration has placed it in.
I am scared, I am truly scared. Mommy!!!

Rahm Running Scared?

While the evidence of Rahmbo and the Bama admin. having full bore contact with Baretta (Blagojevich), concerning Obama's Senate seat, is tenuous, at best. General knowledge of past political connections these bozos share is undeniable. However, until further proof arises, theories about Bama wrong doing is all conjecture. But, in typical Rahm protectionist politics, the wily Washington "snake-in-the-grass" is using his sm-u-rts to avoid any potential detraction against him by intrusive media questioning.

While hold up in "Fortress Emanuel" and avoiding a press invasion, Rahm decided to let one of the enemy in to take a leak. The victim, who was only identified as an ABC cameraman, got the chastisement of a lifetime from Emanuel.

Seems Rahm, who is noted for running skeered and having no temper whatsoever, bitched out the cameraman for the media intrusion into his life and even alluded to receiving death-threats because of it.

From ABC
Back at his home, Emanuel appeared "beet-red," according to an ABC News cameraman who was invited inside by Emanuel to use his bathroom this morning.

"I'm getting regular death threats. You've put my home address on national television. I'm pissed at the networks. You've intruded too much, " Emanuel said, according to the cameraman.

If he is "really" that concerned, maybe ole Rhamie ought to check with Governor Palin or Joe the Plumber about how to handle press obtrusion into your life. I am sure they could write a few books on the topic.

Rod "Baretta" Blagojevich

What I have uncovered about Blagojevich is going to shake the United States to its core. I have been mulling over whether or not to release this information due to the destruction this will cause our country. But, in the end I figured everyone had a right to know, regardless of the consequences.

Rod Blagojevich is really Robert Blake of Baretta fame. For those too young to remember, Barreta was a detective series which ran from 1975 to 1978 on ABC.

Bailout R.I.P.

The emergency bailout bill is dead until the next Senate session. No compromise could be reached over the UAW refusal to accept wage cuts in 2009 versus 2011. Bringing the talks and test vote to an abrupt end.

From Yahoo News,

WASHINGTON – A $14 billion emergency bailout for U.S. automakers collapsed in the Senate Thursday night after the United Auto Workers refused to accede to Republican demands for swift wage cuts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was "terribly disappointed" about the demise of an emerging bipartisan deal to rescue Detroit's Big Three.

He spoke shortly after Republicans left a closed-door meeting where they balked at giving the automakers federal aid unless their powerful union agreed to slash wages next year to bring them into line with those of Japanese carmakers.

Republican Sen. George V. Voinovich of Ohio, a strong bailout supporter, said the UAW was willing to make the cuts — but not until 2011.

Reid was working to set a swift test vote on the measure Thursday night, but it was just a formality. The bill was virtually certain to fail to reach the 60-vote threshold it would need to clear to advance.

Reid called the bill's collapse "a loss for the country," adding "I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It's not going to be a pleasant sight."

The implosion followed an unprecedented marathon set of talks at the Capitol among labor, the auto industry and lawmakers who bargained into the night in efforts to salvage the auto bailout at a time of soaring job losses and widespread economic turmoil.

"In the midst of already deep and troubling economic times, we are about to add to that by walking away," said Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., the Banking Committee chairman who led negotiations on the package.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the GOP point man in the talks, said the two sides had been tantalizingly close to a deal, but the UAW's refusal to agree wage concessions by a specific date in 2009 kept them apart.

The autoworkers' contract doesn't expire until 2011. read more...

Obviously, the only question left is, "What now?" GM may be able to provide an answer, Auto Bailout Talks Collapse Over Union Wages.
