Israeli Ground Game: 2nd Quarter

Seems the Israelis have been quite effective at moving the ball on the terrorist team, better known as Hamas. Definitive and effective blows have been struck against the militant organization, with minimal losses on the IDF side. Despite desertions, massive losses, and humiliation, Hamas shouldn't be counted out just yet.

IDF: Whole Hamas battalions wiped out

YnetNews.com-Is Hamas falling apart? A senior IDF officer estimated Saturday that roughly 300 Hamas men have been killed since the army launched its ground incursion in the Gaza Strip. The military official said IDF troops were able to wipe out whole battalions belonging to the Gaza terror group.

"Hundreds of people were killed in the various combat sectors," the officer said. "Some Hamas companies and battalions were simply wiped out. We also see cases of desertions and unauthorized leaves, while some terror activists are scared to undertake moves that would jeopardize them vis-à-vis IDF troops." read more...
The Palestinian people need to get the hell out of the way. A juggernaut is rolling their way and Gaza city is not going to be a place conducive for one's physical health. Especially when Hamas is looking to use human shields to provoke international and Arab opinion against Israel.

A Gaza War Full of Traps and Trickery

NY Times — The grinding urban battle unfolding in the densely populated Gaza Strip is a war of new tactics, quick adaptation and lethal tricks.

Hamas, with training from Iran and Hezbollah, has used the last two years to turn Gaza into a deadly maze of tunnels, booby traps and sophisticated roadside bombs. IDF forces have been be able to seemingly adapt very quickly to the changes in Hamas' tactics. They learned many lessons from the 2oo6 Lebanon war and are in full swing implementing them.

IDF begins deploying reservists into Gaza as part of ground op

Haaretz.com-The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday began deploying reservist troops to the Gaza Strip, for the first time since Israel began its offensive on the Hamas-ruled coastal territory 16 days ago.

The government announced a week ago Saturday that it had approved call-up of tens of thousands of reservist soldiers. The announcement was made almost simultaneously with the launch of the Gaza ground incursion, aimed at halting rocket fire on Israel's southern communities.

The government ordered the armed forces "to draft the necessary reservists, on a scale of tens of thousands of troops." Nearly 10,000 reservists had already been called up in a previous order by the defense establishment the week before. read more...
If this isn't a sign of major escalation then I don't know what is. Israel is going for the kill-shot on Hamas. I find it hard to believe that they will accept anything short of full destruction of the Palestinian militants. Of course, this is totally dependent on Israel's resolve against mounting international pressure to cease operations.
